Fanpai-Home to wooden drum dance

There are many branches of Miao in Taijiang, and the Miao in Fanpai is one of the special one.
26kms from the town of Taijing, Fanpai is located on the high and faraway mountain. Fanpai is called " Fangbi" in Miao language meaning a village on the faraway mountain, the bus trip to the village is bumpy and hard, but the natural scenery of terraced fields is stunning, you also will pass a few Miao villages en route where you can stop to take pictures.

The village is surrounded by green trees and paddy fields, a small river flows through the foot of it. There are more than 200 families in the village, their houses are wooden houses on stilts, they are made of China firs or pines If lucky you may see indigo dying.

Fanpai village has some interesting festivals such as "Worshipping bridge" festival on the second day of the second lunar month, " Miao new year" in the tenth lunar month and the Fertility festival which is held every 12 years.

Fanpai is famous for wooden drum dance, so during the festivals, the villagers get together playing Lusheng, dancing wooden drum. The wooden drum of the village is perticularly excellent. Some girls from this village have been to the other countries to show their wooden drum dance and given people a deep impression, hence " Home to wooden drum dance".

The wooden drum dance is the most grand worshipping dance of Fanpai. During import festivals or the season of fall harvest, or the auspicious occasions, the young and old of Fanpai village get together at the big square in front of the village, they beat wooden drum and dance with the rhythm. The sound of beating the wooden drum is loud, following the rhythm, people dance with violent movement by shaking their hands, feet and heads. The movement of beating and dancing is straightforward and uninhibited, hence " Oriental disco".

Comparing to the other Miao villages, the men of Fanpai still dress in fine traditional festival costumes, this is somewhat different from the other branches, it's not easy to find such a men's festival dress in the modern society.
During festivals, the young girls the village also dress their finest festival dress which is decorated by peculiar silver jewelry on their heads.

The road from Taijiang to Fanzao is acceptable, but it's very bad from Fanzao to Fanpai is pretty bad, so in general, Fanpai is pretty and simple, it's worth visiting for adventure travelers.
